Serpent and Dove is Shelby Mahurin’s debut novel and it is a great one! If you like magic, romance and adventure, then this book is for you!
I rate this book 5 stars
“Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.
Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.
The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.
And love makes fools of us all.”
Louise le Blanc
She is one of our main characters. I love her. Her characterization and personality flies off the page. She is sarcastic, stubborn and hilarious. If she wants something, she will get it no matter what.
The entire novel I am rooting for Lou. We don’t know much about her past as she keeps in hidden but something is wrong.
Reid changes the most from beginning to end. His entire world, at least the one he thought he knew, implodes. His beliefs are challenged and he is forced to make choices he never knew he would need too.
I won’t go into detail about where he ends up as I do not want to spoil anything. However, I am very excited to see where Reid’s story goes in the next book.
Lou and Reid
Okay, so Lou and Reid are my newest favourite fictional couple. They embody, opposites attract. Lou, a witch on the run from her past and Reid, a Chasseur trained to kill witches. Hmm, a perfect match?
Their banter comes across easily and their world views are challenged by on another. Plus, a steamy scene that definitely needed to happen.
I have read plenty of young adult fantasy books that have different magic systems and making them unique can be difficult.
Using magic costs something. That means figuring out what to give up in order to cast a spell. This is anything from a broken finger to a long ago memory.
Plus, there are different types of witches in this series. Dame des Sorcieres where Lou comes from and Blood Witches like Coco and her family. We will learn more about the blood witches in the sequel, Blood and Honey!
Magic systems need to be believable and consistent. Serpant and Dove does just that.
Overall Review of Serpent and Dove
I highly recommend this book. From the start you are captivated with Lou and Reid. As the novel unfolds you need to know what happens next.
