The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell Book Review Creatively Booked
The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

“Stop the magician, steal the book, save the future.

In moder-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic – the Mageus – live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the brink, a dark energy barrier that confies them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power – and often their life.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, colecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’ training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order – and the Brink – before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the magician himself And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.”

There is so much detail in every part of this book that my heart is so excited every time I talk about it. Let’s jump in!

Character Development

This story is told in multiple characters POV (point of view). Lisa Maxwell is one amazing story teller. Each character is distinct, flawed, loveable and mysterious.

Technically our Main Character is Esta. She can travel through time. Well, pull time around herself and stop it at the same moment in history. Her story starts off very interesting and she knows exactly what her job is and where she stands. Overtime it is clear that loyalties are tested but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Esta evolve throughout this book.

Harte Darrigan

I love Harte! He is a magician and he wants so much more out of life than what New York has to offer. He is such an in-depth character. His backstory of where he came from and how he has worked so hard to put on the facade of a magician is very well executed. He is a flawed character but he tries so hard to make a life for himself. He is one of my favourite characters in this book.

Plus, his and Esta’s banter/chemistry is adorable!

Each character is so unique and you can tell whose POV it is in very easily! Who is your favourite character in The Last Magician?

The Brink

The Brink is essentially a force field that if someone who has magic walks through it, they will be drained of their power. It will not kill them completely. But the a person without their magic is simply a shell and they will want to die. If they stay in it too long, they will die.

The Ending

So the entire book there is a clear goal that needs to be reached, you just don’t know exactly how all the characters will manage it.

So as every page is flipped and the ending gets nearer and nearer I am waiting for the solution to present itself! The plot has many elements but it all works.

Since I knew this is the first book in a series, there had to be a twist that set us up for the next book and THERE IS! I am so ready to read the Devils Thief and find out where Esta and the rest of the crew end up!

This is the first book in a long time that I’ve sat back and really appreciated the writing style.

I am definitely more captivated by characters and what is happening to them but my writing brain kicked in. Love the writing style of this book!
