First Thoughts of the Book

My first impression of this books is super positive. The concept of this novel is very intriguing and America is a great main character.

Plus, the cover is pretty awesome too!

The Selection by Kiera Cass Book Review Young Adult Fiction

Synopsis

“For Thirty Five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her, and leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she begins to realize that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she imagined.”

The Universe

I am a sucker of worlds. This novel takes place in the future. Kiera Cass does a pretty good job of explaining this new world. This society is broken into castes numbered 1 to 8. Ones are the elite, very well off whereas; Eights are homeless and outcasted from society.

However, I did find the castes confusing at first. I did not know which caste America and Aspen were in until a few chapters in (this could just be misreading as an fyi). All I knew was definitely a lower one. America is a five. Aspen is a Six. This is a problem since castes are not suppose to mingle. How do they get around this? Well, I can’t spoil it for you so pick up this book and have read!

The other side of the universe is the history. This novel takes place in our society but shows us what war and greed could do to our world. We get enough information needed to understand this new society throughout the novel.

What about the Plot?

The first half of this novel is great. The pacing is on point. We are introduced to America and her world and then she gets thrown a curve ball.

However, I did find a climax lacking because not much else happens in the second half of the book which is why I rated this 3 stars.

On that note, I am curious to see what happens next so I have the next 2 books in the series and will let you know what I think! I am hoping for more suspense and a satisfying climax!

Random Thoughts

“35 Girls. 1 Crown. The Competition of a Lifetime.”

– Kiera Cass, The Selection

This quote which is on the front cover of the book, made be think of The Bachelor. Yes, I do watch it. It makes me think where Kiera Cass got her inspiration from.

I love a competition based story and then add gowns, drama and two handsome men! Hmm, what could possibly go wrong?

Final Thoughts

I do recommend this book because it is an easy read. I sat down and read this book in one sitting (on a four hour plane ride). It was still one sitting!

The characters are great. They each have distinct personalities that come across on the page. America is true to herself. Plus, she is just as confused like every girl when it comes to love.

Plus, there are four more books in this series which means a lot more is going to happen!

Happy Reading folks!
